LA PORTE CITY — The STC girls basketball team moved to 2-1 on the young season with a 38-20 victory over Union on Monday night, Dec. 8. Traveling to La Porte City, the Trojans used a stifling defense that created several turnovers by the Knights on their way to victory.
STC jumped out to a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, behind a team-leading 5 points from sophomore guard Cahysia Kapayou. After Union found some momentum in the second quarter and chipped away at the lead, Kapayou and sophomore Dyan Keahna hit back-to-back baskets to pace STC on their way to a 21-9 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Trojans got multiple early scores from senior Rylee Ridout to extend the lead to 25-13. However, shortly after, Ridout left the game with an injury. But with even team scoring, including a turn-around jump shot by sophomore Stella Zmolek, STC pushed their lead to 33-13. The Trojans outscored Union 17-11 in the second half to solidify the 38-20 victory.
