Tyynismaa breaks school record in win at Wartburg

WAVERLY — South Tama County senior Tommy Tyynismaa broke the school record en route to an individual title at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational on Saturday at the Wartburg College Max Cross Country Course.

Tyynismaa clocked in at 15 minutes, 59.60 seconds, to break STC’s former school record of 16:06 set by Joe Hughs in 1998.

The Trojans totaled 150 points to place fourth in the 27-team extravaganza. Marshalltown emerged 11th with 333 points and BCLUW was 18th with 491 points.

James Brant helped STC’s cause with a fifth-place finish in 16:48.13, while Braxten Rohrs was 32nd in 17:47.45. Cade Rosenberger picked up 48th place with a time of 18:07.22, and Barrett Jesina rounded out the Trojans’ team scoring by

placing 70th in 18:25.98. Kaden Kopsa placed 83rd (18:37.46), Holden Schirmer was 96th (18:58.01) and Cale Graff came in 117th (19:24.99) for South Tama.

The South Tama girls finished 20th out of 21 scoring teams, totaling 554 points. The Trojans’ top finisher was Kayla Heck, who placed 97th with a time of 23:39.12. Autumn Elsbury wasn’t far behind in finishing 126th in 24:54.81. Andrea Padilla picked up 149th place for STC, clocking in at 26:29.86, with Alex Castanon close behind in 157th place (27:05.60). Maribel Castanon closed out South Tama’s team scoring in 170th place (29:46.28).
