Atchison, Kansas-The Grand View Vikings football team defeated number two ranked Benedictine College Ravens 27-6. Grand View moves to 6-0 on the season, Benedictine falls to 5-1.

Game Recap

The first half was a battle of defenses. Grand View received the opening kickoff and was forced into a three and out and punted the ball to the Ravens. On the Ravens, second play of their opening possession the pass was intercepted by Pat Canby (JR/Mount Pleasant, IA) to give the ball back to Grand View around midfield. Three plays later the Benedictine defense intercepted a pass. Benedictine would go on a long drive late in the first quarter but when they got deep in the redzone the Viking defense forced the Ravens to settle for a field goal which gave the Ravens a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

On Grand View’s next possession a long 36-yard pass from Johnny Sullivan (SO/Clinton, IA) to Anthony Turner (JR/Hartwell, GA) set the Viking up in a great spot to get on the scoreboard. The Vikings were forced to try a 35-yard field goal that was made by Nathan Hamilton (FR/Bettendorf, IA). This tied the game early in the second 3-3. On the following Benedictine possession another deep ball this time from Benedictine put the Ravens in excellent field position which eventually ended with a 42-yard successful field goal to give the Ravens a 6-3 lead going into halftime.

Benedictine received the second-half kickoff. On their second play of the second half another Viking interception this time by Jianni Angulo (FR/Katy, TX) gave the Vikings the ball deep in Raven territory. This time the Vikings would not be denied six. Sullivan hooked up with Turner for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Vikings a 10-6 lead early in the third. When the Ravens got the ball back the Grand View defense forced a three and out. The punt was blocked by Danny Koch (JR/Council Bluffs, IA) to once again give the Vikings excellent field position. Just like the last drive, the Vikings wouldn’t be denied a trip to the endzone. This time Jerry Lowe (SR/Tama, IA) rushed it in from 7-yards. This gave the Vikings a 17-6 lead. Later in the third Dallis Flowers (JR/Chicago, IL) intercepted a third Benedictine pass to give the Vikings the ball back near midfield. The rest of the quarter featured punts by both offenses.

Early in the fourth, the Vikings drove the field and Hamilton connected on a 43-yard field goal to push the Viking lead to 20-6. The Ravens received the kickoff and on their second play fumbled the ball and gave the ball back to the Vikings deep in Raven territory. With another short field opportunity, Sullivan eventually found the endzone on a 16-yard quarterback keeper to extend the lead 27-6. This would be the final score of the game. The number seven ranked Vikings defeated the number two ranked Ravens 27-6.

Key’s of the Game

Grand View owned the ball all game. The Vikings ran 73 offensive plays Saturday versus 52 for the Ravens and outgained the Ravens 282-185 total yards. Grand View was dominant on the ground running for a team total of 188 yards. Lowe led the way rushing for 75-yards and one touchdown. Devon Pressley (JR/Farmington Hill, MI) and Sullivan added 48 and 42-yards on the ground respectively. In the air, Sullivan was 11/21 for 94 yards one touchdown and an interception. Turner was a big-play guy all game catching four balls for 65-yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Vikings forced four turnovers and had a blocked punt. Flowers, Canby, and Angulo all intercepted a pass. Koch blocked a punt that led to a score. Ben Slavens (SR/Bettendorf, IA) both forced and recovered a fumble. Austin Cuicchi (SR/Riverside, CA) was in the backfield all day finishing with two sacks and two tackles for loss.

Sports Editor Note: In his senior season with the Vikings, running back Jerry Lowe has been a rushing leader for the team, totaling 309 yards and 3 touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Lowe was sidelined during weeks four and five but returned to the starting lineup in week six against Benedictine. After next week’s bye, the Vikings will have five more regular season games before looking toward potential playoff action.

Jerry Lowe graduated from South Tama in 2016. While at STC Lowe was involved in football, wrestling, soccer, and track. Lowe was a Class 2A first team running back in his Senior year for the Trojans. He is the son of Ron and Brenda Lowe of Tama.
