Supports Grassley’s effort on medically underserved
To the Editor:
The number of Iowans residing in medically underserved areas is a serious concern. For many Iowans – particularly seniors it can be challenging to access basic health services, such as routine health testing and the management of chronic diseases. Fortunately, Senator Chuck Grassley has stepped up to champion the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act(S.314) to combat this problem. Under this Act, Medicare beneficiaries will have access to health care services provided by pharmacists. Instead of traveling long distances to receive routine medical services at a physician’s office, patients will be able to visit their local pharmacist, often located within a few miles of their homes.
The Act offers a local solution to meeting the growing demand in medically underserved areas. Pharmacists, such as myself, can move beyond our primary role of filling patients’ prescriptions to collaborate with health care providers and offer a broader range of services.
The demand for health care services in medically underserved areas is only expected to rise as the number of seniors living longer and suffering from chronic diseases continues to climb. Many pharmacists already provide a wide range of health care services to patients in these areas, but are unable to receive reimbursements under Medicare. Without reimbursements pharmacists are limited in the amount of additional services they are able to offer patients, despite having the capability to provide them.
Senator Grassley’s bill offers a solution to this problem, allowing access to medical services for those Iowans who need them the most. Senators around the country should take note of the strong leadership Senator Grassley has demonstrated on this pressing issue.
