Letter to the Editor: International Worker’s Day

Our home on K Avenue north of Toledo is experiencing an onslaught of unwelcome traffic since the closure of Hwy 63. This is not a letter of complaint, however. A quick look around and I see our community buzzing with construction activity. Workers are tirelessly engaged in physically demanding work.

May 1 is International Worker’s Day. A day originating back to the labor movement of the 19th century when workers faced long hours, unsafe conditions, and low pay. These conditions promoted the formation of labor unions and advocacy groups.

May 1 serves as a reminder of the continuous need to raise awareness about ongoing labor issues such as fair wages and supporting worker’s rights. Today when we talk about worker’s rights it follows that those are immigrant rights. Look around and see who is doing the hard work. Our immigrants are essential to our community and our economy. When immigrant workers are exploited, all workers are impacted. We know that our communities are safer, healthier, and more prosperous when we all have the resources we need to thrive.

Take a moment to be aware of the workers around you. In recognition of International Worker’s Day offer a smile or nod of recognition and respect in appreciation for the contributions of all of our laborers.
