The South Tama varsity volleyball team returned home on Tuesday, September 16 to face Williamsburg in a key WaMaC conference battle. After three close games, the Raiders were able to walk away with a 3-0 match win.

In the early portion of the first game, the two teams battled back and forth. Williamsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a kill by STC senior Rylee Ridout and an ace by sophomore Maylee Rucker drew the Trojans to a 2-2 tie. STC went out to a 6-4 lead after an ace by junior Paisley Bro and multiple kills from sophomore Stella Zmolek. But that would end up being STC’s largest lead of the game, as the Raiders went on to rattle off a 15-3 run to give them a 19-9 lead. After a timeout by STC head coach Emily Chyma, the Trojans were able to find a spark and go on a late-game run. Multiple kills by Bro and a serving ace by sophomore Shelby Johannsen helped lead the Trojans to cut the lead to 20-15. But Williamsburg was able to pull away and secure a game-one win, 25-18.

Interestingly, the middle game of the night followed almost the exact same script as the first. The two teams battled close early, with STC getting out to an early 5-4 lead courtesy of an ace by Rucker and four kills by Zmolek. But the Raiders once again pulled away in the middle of the game, this time going on a 14-5 run to take an 18-9 lead. Again, STC made a late-game run, this time lead by a Bro kill and three aces by sophomore Brylee Nelson, cutting the Raider lead to 20-18. However, Williamsburg closed out with five straight points to end the second game with a 25-18 victory.

In the final game of the night, STC fought hard and had a strong start. The Trojans came out with an early 4-1 lead thanks to points by Rucker, Bro, and junior Mady Boriskey. But Williamsburg fought back and pulled even at the score of 6-6. From there, the two teams battled back and forth in a very competitive match. The Raiders secured their first lead at 8-7, but multiple aces by Trojan sophomore Scout Ridout pulled STC as close as 11-10. As the teams traded points back and forth, the Raiders were able to pull away in the end and won 25-20.

Up next for STC (8-11-1; 0-2 in WaMaC) will be the South Tama Varsity Invite on Saturday, Sept. 27. The action will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the STC high school gym. Participating area teams include East Marshall, Belle Plaine, and Waterloo East.
