STC volleyball concludes season with regional loss

CENTER POINT — The South Tama varsity volleyball team opened postseason play on Tuesday night, Oct. 22. They traveled to Center-Point Urbana to face the Stormin’ Pointers (18-12) in the Class 3A Region 5 Quarterfinal. Unfortunately, the Trojans’ season came to an end, as CPU swept STC in three straight sets: 25-10, 25-16, and 25-11.

The first set got off to a competitive start. The teams were tied at 4 before CPU raced out to a 12-5 lead. The Trojans battled back to cut the lead to 15-9. However, the Pointers ran with the lead from there and won the set, 25-10.

In the second set, the Trojans got off to an early 6-5 lead. But the Pointers quickly responded and went on a run to take a 10-7 lead. In the middle of the set, STC hung tough. The two teams battled back and forth, with the Trojans getting as close as 15-13. But CPU pulled away from there and won the set 25-16.

In the final set, CPU got off to a commanding 16-2 lead. The Trojans continued to fight and pulled as close as 23-11. But the Pointers finished off the set, 25-11, and completed the sweep to advance in postseason play.

For the night, the Trojans were led by sophomore Paisley Bro with 9 kills. She was followed by senior co-captain Janette Cervantes who contributed 4 kills. The Trojans were once again led in assists by senior Skyla Beck with 17. Defensively, freshman Keinzle Boriskey and junior Rylee Ridout tied for the team lead in blocks on the night. Bro paced the team with 8 digs, followed by Beck with 6, and Cervantes and senior co-captain Cailey Brown with 5 each. Brown and senior Madison Wiese led the team in aces on the night.

With the loss, the Trojans finished the season with an overall record of 13-20. Team-leaders for the season in kills included Bro (184), Cervantes (132), and senior co-captain Macy Welsh (103)–the only three Trojans who recorded over 100 kills. Beck led the team with 375 assists on the year. In blocks, the Trojans were led by Welsh (36), Boriskey (34), and Cervantes (25). Four Trojans had over 100 digs on the year: Brown (217), Cervantes (170), Beck (153), and Bro (121). Finally, STC was led in aces by Cervantes (53), followed by Welsh (41), and freshman Scout Ridout (31).
