Just Jonathan: An Old Man at Heart
Jonathan Meyer.
Sipping black coffee, recliner time, and lawn care, these are just a few examples of why my roommates call me “an old man at heart”. Have I always been that way? I think my parents would probably tell you “Yes, yes he has.”
Long before I could remember anything, (as the story is told) I was sitting in a dentist office waiting to have work done on my little teeth, when a bit of that older soul started to emerge. Now excuse me, as this won’t be the most politically correct thing I’ve ever written, but here goes: As I sat in the office, someone came in with their service dog and my gosh did that upset me like no other. Apparently I was flabbergasted that you would even think about bringing a dog to a dentist, apparently I just wouldn’t let it go and kept grumbling to myself as I scribbled into a coloring book. I’m sure I had a great lesson on service dogs on my way home and became a bit more compassionate.
Call me old on this one, but what in the world is going on with those electric scooters and E-bikes? I remember having both a bike and a scooter as a kid, and guess what? I pushed and peddled, all on my own! When you use your legs to ride those things, it might even count as exercise! I don’t understand why we’re giving young people machines that go faster than they ever need to be traveling and not supervising them. I could gripe about those things for a long while. I have a sneaking suspicion that the state legislature is going to address that problem very soon…
Isn’t it rich I’m typing this as I people watch out my window? Sometimes all it takes is looking outside and making sure that people are being respectful of the environment we all share.
When I’m at our office in downtown Tama, I keep the blinds open just to keep an eye on all the passers by and the Hardon’s workers around. Its not a trust thing as much as an awareness thing. If I hear sirens and see lights flashing, that’s even better.
As some of you might know, I’m a really bad texter. I try to be more of a phone call kind of guy, but that doesn’t work either sometimes. You might just have to come knock on my door and ask me to my face. If I don’t answer the door, I’m probably pulling weeds in the flower bed, mowing the lawn, or taking a much needed nap.
I’m not sure how I’ve ended up like this, yet I’m pretty dang content. Although I’m only 22, I’m feeling closer and closer to retirement age.
Until I feel a little younger, I’m Just Jonathan.
