STC boys baseball is back in action
Summer is here and Trojan boys baseball is officially underway for the South Tama athletes, coaches, and fans. South Tama has a really strong group of seniors and encouraging young athletes that has helped the team find success in the early parts of the season. So as the baseball season started off against the Marshalltown Bobcats there was a lot of excitement from the fans and players surrounding the sport.
In the first game of the year, the Trojans competed in a close thriller with Marshalltown. The game was back and forth throughout with it ending in a tie after seven innings, forcing it into extra innings. In the end Marshalltown was able to pull away from the Trojans with a final score of 7-5 in a highly competitive first game of the season. Following this game the Trojans went head to head with the at the time, second ranked West Marshall Trojans where they fell 12-2 in the tough matchup. Even though it was a blowout on the scoreboard it served as a good test for South Tama as they continued to show improvement against one of the best baseball teams in the state.
The very next day South Tama got back on the field to play against GMG, as they looked to bounce back from recent losses and capture their first win of the season. As the game got underway both teams were evenly matched through three innings as the score was all even at 4-4. But over the next few innings STC started to get hot with several consecutive base hits which allowed them to take and increase the lead, especially in the sixth inning where they racked up 4 runs. GMG was able to make a late run with two scores in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Trojans as they were able to capture their first win of the season with a 11-6 victory.
Senior Daniel Wiese had several things to say about how the 2024 South Tama baseball season is going so far.
“The season has been pretty good and encouraging. We’ve had a lot of tough teams that we’ve played but I can see us winning a good number of games this year,” he said. “We have some new guys that keep getting better and a good group of senior leaders. I think this season will be a lot of fun and a successful year.”
