Tyynismaa, Brant propel Trojans to fourth place at WaMaC

MARION — The South Tama boys’ cross country team had a pair of top-five finishers on its way to taking fourth place in the WaMaC Conference meet last Thursday at Antioch Christian Church.

Seniors Tommy Tyynismaa and James Brant placed second and fourth, respectively, with their times of 16 minutes, 29.8 seconds, and 16:38.4. Mount Vernon-Lisbon’s Grady Olberding captured the meet title in a time of 16:13.0, while Solon’s Brick Kabela was third in 16:31.7.

Cade Rosenberger placed 22nd for the Trojans in 17:43.3 — a new personal-record time — and the duo of Braxten Rohrs (35th, 18:06.2) and Barrett Jesina (37th, 18:07.6) rounded out STC’s team scoring.

Holden Schirmer was the Trojans’ final competitor, crossing the finish line in 44th place (18:20.1).

Solon, ranked 13th in Class 3A, leapfrogged three teams ranked ahead of it to place first in the conference meet as the Spartans totaled 85 points. Sixth-ranked Mount Vernon-Lisbon was second with 87, and No. 11 Clear Creek-Amana was third with 98.

South Tama, ranked 12th in 3A, was two points back in fourth with 100. Vinton-Shellsburg, ranked seventh in 2A, was fifth (140), followed by 3A No. 17 Center Point-Urbana (154), No. 19 Grinnell (156) and No. 20 Marion (159) in the 12-team invitational.

The South Tama girls were unable to score as a team with only four participating runners.

Kayla Heck led the way for the Trojans by finishing 52nd in 23:18.1, while Nadia Onichimowska scored 56th place in 23:42.8.

Livia Smith (25:49.8) and Andrea Padilla (25:52.3) finished consecutively in 72nd and 73rd place.

Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the girls’ team title with 58 points, followed by Solon (69) and Marion (88). Sophomore Addison Dabroski from Marion had a 30-cushion at the front of the pack, winning the conference title in 19:34.7.
