Just Jonathan: Mistakes and surprises

Jonathan Meyer.

As it always is, the newspaper side of my life was very interesting this week. I learned that I’m not able to differentiate fruits and a few unexpected people read my work in this very column!

Last week I published a short preview of what’s to come at the Lincoln Highway Bridge Festival this year. Nothing out of the ordinary, I believe we’ve done that for the past few years.

As I’ve gotten more involved with this job and our community, one of my favorite things to do is learn the history of what’s happening around us. In 2025 that took shape by visiting the Historical Society a few times, and driving into the library’s archives of old newspapers.

I feel like I learned a lot last year about former editions of the Bridge Festival. If you remember, we ran an old picture taken from a helicopter some 20 plus years ago. That stuff was super exciting, and I think adds value to a paper.

My big mistake was simply a fix up in fruit! Last week I reported the festival originally was the Cherry Blossom Festival. I can tell you I was in the ballpark, however I was reminded nearly instantly that it was indeed the Apple Blossom festival–whoops! I give myself a little credit that I at least remembered a different red fruit, but I still regret the error. Thanks to those that reached out and we not only got that fixed on the website, but issued a correction in this week’s paper.

Big a small paper, it’s bound to happen sometimes. I’m just happy everyone was so nice about it.

In a completely different direction, I’ve been doing my duties as president at a certain institution that I’m studying at. As I’ve gotten more comfortable in my role I continue to learn more about the processes of the college and how things work.

As I was being introduced to a member of Strategic Marketing and Communications, this woman seemed to know me. As I came to understand, she monitors the internet for every time the name of my college is mentioned. You probably guessed it, that includes this column.

Someone I have never seen in my life, who lives fifty miles away from our community, knew about this column. That blew my mind, and also made me think back if I’ve said anything I shouldn’t have! I think I’m good, but wow that was a shocker.

Through mistakes and surprises, this job has brought me nothing but an opportunity to grow and continue serving my community in the best way I can.

Until next week’s crazy edition of this paper, I’m Just Jonathan.
