One more back to school column…

John Sheda

Last week I shared about my 8th grade year way back in 1963. The “good ol’ days” right? Here are some final thoughts for all the parents that are sending their children into the school world. First the 10 Commandments for parents and then something you can stick to your refrigerator.

Thou shalt not depend on you school for the moral and spiritual guidance for your children. Not the Church or Sunday School either. They will help you but it is YOUR responsibility to provide this.

Thou shalt not compare the progress of your son or daughter with your other kids or with other kids in general. Your child is absolutely unique. 7 billion people in the world today and no one is quite like your son or daughter.

Thou shalt work with their teacher and also expect them to try their hardest and do their best.

Thou shalt be keenly aware of what’s being taught. Be active and pro-active in your child’s schooling.

Thou shalt not criticize or be critical of teachers and coaches in front of your kids. This allows your child to have excuses.

Thou shalt take time to laugh, smile and have a good time with your kids. They will turn out fine! As Bugs Bunny says, “Unlax.”

Thou shalt at all times know who your kid’s friends are and who they’re hanging out with.

Thou shalt again at all times be the parent first and then, if possible, be a friend to your children.

Thou shalt treat your kids as mature and responsible but don’t forget to let them be kids a couple of times a week.

Thou shalt make sure your home is a secure, loving and safe place to be. This goes for your school and your church too. Our kids need to know we have their backs-at all times!

Children Live What They Learn.

If a child lives with CRITICISM, they learn to condemn.

If a child lives with HOSTILITY, they learn to fight.

If a child lives with RIDICULE, they learn to be timid & fearful.

If a child lives with SHAME, they learn to feel guilty.

If a child lives with TOLERANCE, they learn to be patient.

If a child lives with ENCOURAGEMENT, they learn to be confident.

If a child lives with PRAISE, they learn to appreciate.

If a child lives with FAIRNESS, they learn justice.

If a child lives with SECURITY, they have faith.

If a child lives with APPROVAL, they learn to like themselves.

If a child lives with ACCEPTANCE, they learn the value of friendship.
