South Tama Supt. Smith’s contract renewed for additional two years

The contract of South Tama Schools Superintendent Jared Smith was renewed through the 2022-23 school year on a 4-0 vote of the school board Monday night, Feb. 17. The action came following a closed session as allowed by Iowa law.

Voting for the extension were board members Mandy Lekin, Ron Houghton, Clint werner and Penny Tyynismaa. Member Alan Kline was absent.

Smith’s current base salary is listed at $154,038 in the salary schedule published in July. He took over as South Tama Superintendent on July 1, 2018.

During his career Smith served as assistant principal at Ft. Dodge and assistant high school principal at Waterloo East High, both for four year stints and had just completed his second year as principal at Muscatine High School when he accepted the South Tama position.

He previously had taught elementary school at Sarasota, Fla., and at an Ogden School in downtown Chicago.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Masters in Education from National Louis University, and Doctorate from Iowa State University, Ames

The meeting minutes did not reflect what, if any adjustment was agreed to for the extended contract period.

In the only other personnel matter, Jerod Bridgewater was approved as middle school B assistant soccer coach effective March 20 and the resignation of Tiffany Bridgewater, assistant middle school baseball coach was accepted.

On Feb. 17 the school board:

approved 1st reading of Board Policy Section 900 governing buildings and sites. The policy covers educational specifications for buildings, evaluations, finances,scheduled maintenance, emergency repairs, equipment and lease sale and disposal of district buildings and sites. Also included are emergency procedures, community use of buildings and facilities, use of video cameras to monitor areas, restrictions on use, measures in the event of vandalism, restriction of recreational vehicles on school property and restrictions upon use.
