February 16 through the 23rd was National FFA Week and the South Tama County FFA celebrated with dress-up days, games during lunch, decorating the high school, reading at the elementary and sub-district contest. National FFA Week gives students, members, and advisors a time to share what FFA is about and the impact it has on members.

The FFA Chapter started off the week by decorating the high school with posters, streamers, and National Blue and Corn Gold colors. The posters contained information or facts about agriculture and FFA. Back for the second year was the duck hunt! For the duck hunt, the chapter has their advisor Mrs. Brown hide three rubber ducks for the upcoming day. Once they are hidden anyone in the school is able to find them and if you find one and turn it into Mrs. Brown you will receive a prize.

The South Tama County FFA Chapter also created dress-up days and lunch games for the week. The dress-up days and lunch games included: Monday’s dress-up day was FFA day, show off your blue and gold pride and our lunch game was Donut on a String, Tuesday- Red, White & Blue Day and Corn Hole at lunch, Thursday- Favorite Teams Day and our lunch game was pin the tail on the cowl and Friday was Flannel Day with minute-to-win-in Marshmallow Toss during lunch.

On Monday, February 18th, five FFA members went to the STC Elementary School and read agriculture related books to the first through third-grade classes. Some of the book topics included bees and pollination, the journey of seeds, anywhere farms/gardens, ingredients in our cookies and meals throughout the day and where they came from. This is a great way to get kids involved at a young age and inform them that agriculture is in fact impacted by their lives too.

On Tuesday, February 19th, five members traveled to the FFA Enrichment Center on the DMACC campus in Ankeny to participate in Sub-District contest. Taylor Lekin competed in Job Interview and received Gold and will advance to Districts. Abbigail Froelich, Rachel Silhanek and Jaycie Rauch competed in the Chapter Program and received Gold- Alternate to Districts. Lastly, Skyler Steveson competed in Public Speaking and received Silver.

To wrap up National FFA Week the members wanted to thank the teachers for all of their support to the FFA Chapter. The Members showed their appreciation by making treats for the teacher’s lounge on Thursday, February 21st and they also held a teacher appreciation breakfast on Friday, February 22nd. They served them pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, fruit, and mini muffins along with milk, orange juice, and coffee. Our chapter truly appreciates the support of our faculty and staff.

Next up for the chapter is the district contest being held on March 2nd at Indianola High School. Taylor Lekin will compete in Job Interview once again and we will have two members represent our chapter as delegates to vote on new district officers and other business relevant to our district.
