They’re talking about the one at 1700 Harding St., Tama, not the one at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The Tama address has long held some name recognition as “The White House” since it became the headquarters for the South Tama School Administration in about 1970.

What’s needed are some signs identifying the building and directing visitors to entrances and a “paint job” on the exterior.

STC Superintendent Jared Smith told school board members Monday night, Jan. 21, visitors, job applicants and vendors sometimes have a difficult time locating the building and navigating the entrance.

A sign stood in fornt of the building identifiying it as the site of the administration and board of education for many years. However, it was appparnetly removed several eyars ago and ont repalced.

A series of directional signs have been designed by Nagle Sign Co., Marshalltown and Waterloo, to remedy the situation. The exterior painting, if approved, will be a sumeer project, Smith said.

The school board is expected to act on the proposed signage at a February meeting.

A cost breakdown includes an interior lighted two-way sign costing $5,584; a pair of non-lit building directional signs #2,037; and a non-lit interior sign panel $170.

The White House was moved to its location from across Harding (U.S. Hgihway 63) to the west when the district acquired the property for the site of the new high school.

After consolidation i n the early 1960s, district business affairs were conducted from another house- this one at the corner of Siegel and 11th Street also in Tama, in what is now an apartment house.
