South Tama School Board annual reorganizational meeting––––––– Sac and Fox easement, personnel, overnight student trips approved

On Monday night, Sept. 19, the South Tama County Community Board of Education held their reorganizational meeting to elect a President and Vice President for the coming year.

Michelle Yuska was reelected President and Mark McFate was reelected as Vice President. Mary Boege read the oath and swore both members in to office.

Access to Farm Ground Granted to San and Fox Tribe

An easement agreement was approved between the Community School District of South Tama County and the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa in which the school grants to the Tribe an easement of access across a portion of land within the City of Toledo.

The purpose of the easement is to allow the Tribe access to its farm ground west of the High School.

The easement shall be perpetual in nature and shall run with the land. The easement gives the Tribe access across the easement area for Tribe personnel or its employees, agents or agricultural tenants as may be necessary for the purposes of agricultural use of the Tribe property.

Personnel

Contracts approved were for Chris Drummer for wrestling cheer coach, salary $2,690; Ashley Thompson, high school special education aide, $11.22 hourly; Amy Wade, middle school behavior interventionist, $38,896; Jena Ferneau, elementary cook, $12.70 hourly; Ashley Raue, 8th Grade Girls Track, $1,983; Dale Probasco, afternoon bus route, $29.77 per route; Marissa Cozine, 7th Grade Girls Track, $1,983; and Ron Lowe, morning and afternoon bus route.

Mark McFate was selected to represent the South Tama County school district as a delegate to the IASB annual meeting on Nov. 16.

Overnight Trips Approved

The Activities Department Overnight trips scheduled for the 2016-17 year approved were as follows: Tuesday, Oct 18- returning Saturday Oct. 22, National FFA Conference at Indianapolis, Ind.; Oct. 28 and 29 for State Cross Country at Ames; Nov. 8 – 11 for State Varsity Volleyball tournament at Cedar Rapids; Nov. 11 – 12 for Thespian Festival at Cedar Falls; Nov. 18 – 19 Football Playoffs at Cedar Falls; Nov. 19 – 20 All State Music Festival at Ames.

And, Feb. 3 – 4 ISU Honor Band at Ames; Feb.16 – 18 State Wrestling at Des Moines; Feb. 27 – March 4 Girls State Basketball Tournament at Des Moines; March 8 – March 10 Boys State Basketball Tournament at Des Moines; April 16 – 18 FFA State Leadership Conference in Des Moines; May 18 – 20 Boys and Girls State Track meet in Des Moines; May 23- 30 band and vocal trip to New York City; May 26 – 27 Boys State Tennis and Boys State Golf tournaments; destination to be determined, May 26 – 27 Boys State Soccer tournament in Des Moines; May 30 -31 Girls State Golf and June 1 – June 3 Girls State Tennis, both destinations to be determined; June 8 – 9 Girls Soccer State in Des Moines,; July 20 – 21 State Softball and July 21 – 28 Boys State Baseball, both to be determined.

Raise Funds

Fund raisers planned by coaches and sponsors of the High School Activities Department for September, 2016, are Football Cheerleaders selling cookie dough, FFA selling lunches to farmers, Student Council selling Spirit Items, selling Homecoming T-shirts and Homecoming Dance.

October – FCA Free Will Donation at Community Supper, Large Group Speech at Middle School Dance, FFA Fruit Sales, Girls Track selling STC Bag Boards. November – Thespians selling Hugs and Kisses at a Musical, Leadership selling Spirit Items; winter large group speech selling of large group speech T-shirts.

December – Speech-Thespians Holiday dessert performance, Thespians Winder Concert bake sale, Basketball cheerleaders selling clothing and Basket Ball elementary cheer camp. Wrestling Cheerleaders will have wrestling elementary cheer camp and sell carnations for Valentines day. February and March – FFA will sell cookie dough,

March and April – baseball will sell cookie dough and pizza.

April – Thespians selling of hugs and kisses at a play, and FFA plant sales. Spring includes Individual speech selling of individual speech T-shirts, and Thespians selling of Play T-shirts.

May and June FCA – all sports camp and May and July Softball concession stand.

Abuse Investigators

Iowa Code provides an uniform procedure for investigating allegations of physical and sexual abuse of students by employees.

Hazards

Superintendent Mary Jones met with Tama County Emergency Management to review the rewriting of the Tama County Hazard Mitigation Plans.

The School District and the school buildings are included in the hazard mitigation plan as critical facilities in times of crisis.

The four goals of the plan are- minimize losses to existing and future structures within hazard areas; critical facilities and identified assets are high priority structures; protect the health and safety of Tama County residents and visitors; educate Tama County citizens about the dangers of hazards and how they can be prepared.

Board Policies

The Board had the third and final reading of Board Policy 402.01 on Equal Educational Opportunity, changing the name from Affirmative Action & Equal Employment Opportunity.

It reads “It is the policy of the STC Community School District not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, creed, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and socioeconomic status in its educational program and its employment practices.

The board requires all persons, agencies, vendors, contractors and other persons and organizations doing business with or performing services for the school district to subscribe to all applicable federal and state laws, executive orders, rules and regulations pertaining to contract compliance and equal opportunity.

The third and final reading of Policy 500, Objectives for Equal Education Opportunities for Students, was approved.

This policy is devoted to the board’s goals and objectives for assisting the students of the school district in obtaining an education. Each student will have an opportunity to obtain an education in compliance with the policies in this series. It is the goal of t he board to develop a health social, intellectual, emotional and physical self-concept in the students enrolled.

The board supports the delivery of the education program and services to students free of discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, creed, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and socio-economic status.
