South Tama School Board awards $5.74 million contract for high school classroom addition

Garling Construction, Belle Plaine, was awarded the contract to build the addition to the South Tama Hgih School in Tama by the STC School Board meeting in speical session on Monday night, May 23. The Garling bid was $5,740,000, the lowest of the three received for the classrooms which will replace four portable classrooms and add additional space.

Other bidders were Hay Construction Services, Marshalltown, $6,327,500 and Woodruff Construction, Waterloo, $6,437,000.

Completion date for the project is Aug. 1, 2017.

At the Monday meeting meeting, Travis Squiers, Piper Jaffray, Des Moines, presented proposals for the bonds to pay for the work.

They included BB&T Government Finance, Charlotte, N.C. at an interest rate of 2.23 percent; Sterling National Bank of Warrenville, Ill., 2.44 percent; Key Government Finance, Superior, Colo. 2.66 percent and Signature Bank 3 percent.A resolution was approved directing the sale of $6.315 million school infrastructure sales, services and use tax revenue bonds, Series 2106, with a maturity date of January 1, 2030.

Bids were also sought from Brycon Corporation, Marshalltown, Con-Struct Inc. Marshalltown, and Gethmann Construction Co., Gladbrook, of which none made submissions.

In other business:

two contracts were approved, Derek Dixon as 7th Grade social studies teacher, at a salary of $37,685 and Emily Chyma as High School Student Council adviser at a salary of $2,690.

resignations were accepted from Michelle Wiegand as 8th Grade Track coach effective May 6 and Brett Karkosh as Assistant Varsity Wrestling coach, effective immediately.

Current fees for textbooks at the South Tama County District Schools are $40 for elementary (K-4), $50 for Middle School 5-8) and High School (9-12) $60/

The board agreed to an increase of five dollars for each building setting the fees at $45, $55 and $65.
