Plans for an addition to the South Tama High School and some possible cost savings were updated for the school board Monday night by Superintendent Mary Jones. The plan is to replace a set of six portable classrooms installed in 1988 and the possible addition of a new band room.
The cost estimate breakdown includes: site work – $270,455; concrete – 207,052; masonry – $306,405; metals – 919,386; wood and plastics – 50,000; moisture protection and insulation -150,262; openings – 303,240; finishes – $479,443; special construction – 130,450; furnishings – 319,720; conveying system – 100,000; other – 35,000
Totals- $3,583,125.50 for building additions at $1,010,700; remodeling at $475,280 and air conditioning for existing classroom wing $507,200 making the total building at $5,576,306; adding design contingency of 2.5 percent -$139,408 – for a total base bid construction cost of $5,715,713; a construction contingency of 5 percent – $285,785.66; a design fee of 7 percent -$420,104.92; and an additional soft cost of .5 percent -$30,007- would be added, making the total project cost at $6,451,611.
Items not included would be projection screens, TV monitors, smart boards, Teal Room software and filing cabinets.
An alternate plan deducting the band room would make reduce the total cost to $5,864,440.
Other alternates would be to deduct the mechanical/finish upgrades to the existing classroom wing making the total project cost $5,806,115 or deduct the band room and mechanical/finish upgrades to existing classroom wing making the total project cost $5,218,945.
An estimate of the furniture cost in typical classrooms comes to $227,000 or total furniture cost, lounge furniture in classrooms at $248,000.
In action on Monday the school board:
received retirement requests from
Jay Hoskey, Science teacher and coach, Joel O’Connor, elementary education aide and Judy Fuller, elementary kitchen manager, all to become effective the end of the 2015-2016 school year.
viewed a draft of a pamphlet which will go to patron explaining the need to renew the Revenue Purpose Statement.
approved the Modified Allowable Growth Request for At Risk and Drop Out Prevention authorizing the superintendent / designee to certify application to the School Budget Review Committee for up to $233,056. Based on the district enrollment report to the State, the district is eligible to apply to the School Budget Review Committee for up to $233,056 modified supplemental amount for At Risk and Dropout Prevention.
approved a contract for Taylor Zobel as High School Vocational Agriculture and FFA teacher, effective February 16 at a salary of $18,763, prorated based on starting date.
resignations approved were for Desiray Lint as middle school cook and Cory Kroeger as bus driver, both effective Feb.26.
approved the high school music department to plan for a trip to New York City in the Summer of 2017.
heard Steve Vesely, Toledo who was present for public comments asking for information concerning the use of the State Juvenile Home which has been vacant now for nearly two years.
