South Tama School Board does not act on sales tax vote
It was incorrectly reported in the Dec. 18 issue of the Tama News-Herald South Tama voters will vote on Feb. 6, 2016, to decide if they approve the proposed spending of a one-cent tax collected on sales, services and use. No vote has been set for that date. The tax replaces school infrastructure local option sales tax revenues (SILO). this money must be deposited in the State Secure and Advanced Vision for Education Fund (SAVE), and distributed to the School District.
No motion was made at a special school board meeting on Dec. 14 to hold a vote.
If a vote were to be set approval would authorize spending the revenues for other purposes and to replace and extend the existing authorization.
Money received by the STC Community School District from the SAVE education fund may be spent for the following purposes:
to build and furnish a new school building, to build and furnish additions to the school buildings in the District, to remodel, repair, expand, and improve the school buildings in the district, to purchase and improve grounds, for demolition work, or to furnish and equip district facilities.
for the purchase, lease of lease-purchase of buildings, equipment including transportation and recreation equipment, or technology as authorized by law, to implement energy conservation measures, sharing or rental of facilities, procuring or acquisition of libraries, or opening roads to schoolhouse or buildings.
for emergency repairs to respond to natural disasters, such as fire, wind damage, floods, unanticipated mechanical, plumbing, structural, roof, electrical system failures, environmental remediation, or to respond to changes in demographics that require construction of additions to improvements to present or new school buildings.
to establish and maintain public recreation places and playgrounds, provide for supervision and instruction for recreational activities or for community education purposes and other authorized expenditures and purposes as permitted by law and designated by the STC School District.
o provide funds for the payment of principal and interest or retirement of general obligation bonds issued for school infrastructure purposes, energy improvement loans, loan agreements authorized by Iowa Code 297.36, sales, service and use tax revenue bonds.
f this proposition should fail to be approved by the voters, such failure shall not terminate or restrict authority previously granted by the voters to expend receipt s from the SAVE fund. If approved, the Revenue Purpose Statement shall remain in effect until replaced or amended by the STC School District.
