Trojans take double header over Vinton-Shellsburg, drops games to Marion and Woodward-Granger

June 23

STC baseball looked to bounce back after their tough 1 run loss against Nevada at Principal Park against Marion at home in a double header.

Unfortunately Marion had different ideas, the wolves took control in the double header in Tama and didn’t let up on the trojans.

Game 1

South Tama scored their only run of the game in the first inning which came in the form of a single from sophomore Daniel Wiese.

Kary Kesl and Jacob Collison pitched for the Trojans, with 89 pitches from Collison and six strikeouts.

Kesl threw 55 pitches, adding in 5 strikeouts, and didn’t allow a single run during his time on the mound.

South Tama would lose 7-1.

Game 2

In the second battle during the double header, Marion would step on the gas and not let their foot off the brake against STC, winning by a staggering margin of 21-5.

The start of the game did not indicate that the Trojans were going to suffer a huge loss, as South Tama was up 3-2 heading into the third inning.

Marion would score six runs in the third, and then add five more in the fourth, creating a massive gap in between the two teams that South Tama couldn’t come back from.

Ryne Kesl, Jacob Collison and Nolan Upah all pitched in with three RBIs between them.

The Trojans used three pitchers, Kian McBride, Kyle Finch and Nolan Upah.

Upah threw four strikeouts in his two innings on the mound.

STC would go on to face Woodward-Granger away from home.

Both of these teams have seen their fair share of struggles this season, with STCs record sitting at 4-20 heading into this matchup, and WWG at 4-13.

Ryne Kesl and Daniel Wiese would take the mound for the Trojans. Wiese took on the majority of the playing time, getting five innings, throwing 86 pitches and striking out two.

Kesl would chip in with two strikeouts of his own.

Kesl also contributed with his bat, adding an RBI, and two singles. The other RBI of the night for South Tama would come from catcher Jordan Bly.

The Trojans brought the game within a single run in the fifth inning but that would be as close as they came grabbing the lead, eventually losing 3-2.

June 27

After being able to take the weekend off, South Tama would travel east to play against Vinton-Shellsburg in another double header.

The Trojans were on an eight game skid going into these games, but they were able to use them to get back in the win column, by taking both games over Vinton-Shellsburg.

Game 1

The bats were hot for South Tama, getting solid performances out of several players.

Most notably, senior first baseman Draysen Henle produced four RBIs on two doubles in his four at bats.

Other players that added a single RBI of their own were Jordan Bly, Gavin Bridgewater, Jacob Collison and Nolan Upah.

The Trojans were able to steal seven basses during the game, three of which came from senior Logan Schmidt

Collison put in an incredible shift on the mound, nearly pitching a complete game.

Collison would throw 111 pitches in just under seven innings, amassing 11 strikeouts and finishing with an ERA of 2.10 on his way to securing the 10-5 win for South Tama.

Game 2

It was more of the same in the second game of the double header in the way of consistent hitting and solid pitching.

Impressive performances on offense would come from Gavin Bridgewater, and Kyler Smith.

Bridgewater would go two for three in his at bats, including a triple.

Smith went two for four with two singles and an RBI.

RBIs would also come from the bats of Daniel Wiese, Kyle Finch and Logan Schmidt.

Stolen basses didn’t play as much of a part in the Trojans success as they did in game one, however they still managed to collect 3 bags, two of them from Chase Gustafson.

Draysen Henle would take his turn on the mound, also nearly pitching a complete game before coming out in the sixth inning. Henle threw 102 pitches with five strikeouts on the way to a second STC win, 8-3.
