Just Jonathan: Staying cool

Jonathan Meyer.

Now it goes without saying I’m cool and I like staying cool. I’ll add that anyone reading this column is cool. However that isn’t quite the same cool I’m talking about. With a changing climate (believe it or not it’s been warm) staying cool during my mowing job has become a challenge. Here’s a few tips and tricks my coworker and good friend Matt Etzel and I use everyday:

We start everyday by dousing our clothes in water. Sweat won’t bother you nearly as much if you’re already drenched on our own accord.

Having style keeps you at least ten degrees cooler. With an awesome pair of sunglasses you can prevent injury, dim the sun, and look way cooler. An instant relief and sure fire way to keep cool.

We blow each other using our backpack leaf blowers. Nothing keeps you cool quite like being blasted with over a hundred miles an hour of wind. Sweaty shirts and jeans are no match for a Stihl backpack blower. We employ this strategy multiple times a day in our effort to keep lawns looking good.

Chatting with clients keeps customers happy and our time in the shade longer. The longer the conversation, the more time you have to be cool. Plan your route to hit the chatty customers evenly spaced out for maximum benefits.

Take the day off when it’s hot. Nothing will keep you cooler than simply not working. By sitting at home in a recliner you’ll be rested and ready for whatever comes your way the next day.

Matt and I both hope you can take our tips and tricks and use them for good. Obviously heat related illness is no joke, please stay safe while being outside. Hydration is key and is more important than any of our satirical takes. Always remember: stay cool my friends!
