You’ll Figure It Out: October — the greatest month!
John Sheda.
The title of today’s column might be a tad misleading because I don’t really feel October is the greatest month. Not at all. In fact, it might not even be in the top 10 of months for me — except for one thing!
My birthday is in October. So because birthdays are always special, October becomes my favorite month, at least for one day. This year marks the 72nd anniversary of my birth date. And I’ve learned a few things along the way, forgot most things I should have learned and noticed life is a lot like a roll of toilet paper. The closer one gets to the end the faster the roll goes. Hard to believe we’re in the tenth month of 2023 already. Where did spring and summer go?
Here are some things I’ve picked up along the way:
If you don’t know where you’re going, any road you’re on will get you there.
A pat on the back is a short distance from a kick in the butt.
When you’re in your car sitting behind a school bus, wave at those kids waving at you. It’ll make you smile.
Speaking of smiling, smile from time to time. If nothing else, people will either think you’re weird or wonder what you’re up to. Either thought is good.
Life is quite simple; treat people the way you want to be treated.
Life is always challenging, so enjoy those good moments. Celebrate life.
Everyone is normal until you get to know them better.
You will never get lost if you don’t know where you’re at or you don’t care.
If someone really upsets you, for gosh sake, wait 24 hours to think it through.
Find at least two people every day to compliment. You will make their day, guaranteed.
Life just is not fair. Doesn’t make any difference how old you are.
Everyone’s having difficulties; give people the benefit of the doubt.
No one likes to hear you complain day in and day out.
Be a generous tipper. You’ll make their day and you’ll feel better.
Many things in your life will change through the years but family is family. Love ’em to pieces.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Stop blaming others. Take personal responsibility.
Thank the good Lord for the “last minute.” Otherwise nothing would ever get done.
And finally, beyond any shadow of doubt, “You’ll Figure It Out.” Eventually. Let me know what you’ve learned at jsheda@indytel.com or call me at 319.3274640.
