Pastor’s Corner: The Ghost Veteran

Pastor Mike Nodland

What’s amazing are the men and women who gave their lives to pay for our freedom which we remember this Veteran’s Day! The stories are endless of our heroes!

But the story of Matt Urban deserves attention. He was an American officer who fought in WWII against the Germans in the Normandy campaign. On one occasion, he fought off enemy tanks while trudging on a cane due to the broken leg he nearly lost in battle. Carted off to a hospital to recuperate, Lt. Col. Urban escaped and hitchhiked to the German front, manned an abandoned tank, and alone, drove himself into the enemy line. Repeatedly wounded, he refused transport from battle until a bullet to his throat permanently took him out of combat!

Wounded seven times in seven campaigns, the German’s nicknamed him “the Ghost” because he just kept coming back! He was recognized with the Medal of Honor for his many acts of military bravery.

He’s just one example of many who served without recognition… wounded, and even dying. What a cost of freedom! Thank you, veterans!

But there’s one other cost: God gave His One and Only Son for freedom from our sins! Do you know this freedom? Trust Him today!
