4-10’s or not 4-10’s: This week’s Tama County Supervisors meeting
This week’s Tama County Supervisors meeting drew a mighty crowd that included State Representative Dean Fisher; this crowd quickly filed out, leaving a dwindling few after the public comment section. Multiple people spoke again about the dust control on 290th Street, as well as representatives of the quarry. The matter was discussed, but nothing was done by the supervisors, as the problem should be resolved by the quarry sending their trucks on an alternate route.
The supervisors then went on to hold a public hearing for an FY26 budget amendment. Afterwards, two resolutions were approved regarding the FY26 budget amendment.
A long discussion was held regarding the Secondary Roads Department Union employees going to 10 hour days, something that has happened for years. Supervisors Curt Hilmer and Curt Kupka were at odds over the issue. Kupka is in favor of sticking with the regular schedule of five eight-hour days to cover the full week. Hilmer, who worked for the roads department for over two decades, is in favor of still doing the four 10-hour days, so as to give the workers a three day weekend. During the discussion, Hilmer said, “If you guys want to take it away from them, take it away from them, but you’re going to piss them off.”
The roads department union president was present at the meeting, and alternatives were discussed, like some of the workers remaining on 5-8’s, while the others went to 4-10’s so that every day is covered. After much back and forth, no resolution was found. The supervisors wished to have more information on the subject, which the union president would attempt to secure for them.
The supervisors approved to take bids and contracts for the maintenance of the Union Grove Lake property and other derelict properties.
A liquor license for Windy Goat Acres was approved.
Action was finally taken on the copier contracts as changes were made and approved.
Claims totaling $239,925.02 were approved.
