Despite incoming weather, the South Tama school board convened for their second monthly meeting on Monday.

Posted on the agenda in the personnel section, was the resignation of Superintendent John Cain, which will go in effect at the end of the upcoming school year on June 30, 2027.

Cain has been serving the district since the departure of Jared Smith in 2022, overseeing the majority of the new middle school’s construction. Additionally, South Tama has engaged in operational sharing with North Tama, which has seen Cain shared two days a week with our northern neighbor.

During his update, which was delivered virtually, Cain shared his announcement with the board.

“Notice in personnel, I do have my letter of resignation for my retirement. I appreciate your time and expertise over the last four years and I look forward to this final year with the district.”

With a motion from Joe Hanus, Cain’s resignation was accepted later in the meeting.

Travis Squires of Piper Sandler provided the board with an update on how recent changes to state property tax policy could affect the district’s future sales tax revenue, debt payments, and bond rating. He discussed several options for protecting the district’s financial position, including using available funds to reduce debt, preserving flexibility for future projects, and taking a closer look at long-term maintenance needs before considering any new tax measures.

No action was taken with the information Squires shared. The district will continue discussing how to address changes.

With the meeting lasting just over an hour the board dismissed and will meet again next on Aug. 3.
