Unraveling the Wilburys is a tribute to the Traveling Wilburys and the solo careers of Beatle George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and RoyOrbison.

They are featured this Saturday night, Jan. 5, in the Veterans Convention Center at the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel, rural Tama. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8.

The Traveling Wilburys comprised 5 of the most famous names in rock history

The Wilburys filled the airwaves with timeless songs such as Handle With Care, End of the Line, The Devil’s Been Busy, Tweeter and The Monkey Man, She’s My Baby and Heading for the Light.

These, and a number of other great songs, form the basis of the set around which the band weave choice cuts from the solo careers of each of the esteemed Wilburys….Pretty Woman, You Got It (Roy Orbison), Mr Blue Sky, All Around The World (Jeff Lynne’s ELO), The Waiting, I Won’t Back Down (Tom Petty), What Is Life, Here Come’s The Sun (George Harrison) and Hey Mr Tambourine Man, Make You Feel My Love (Bob Dylan) to name but a few. The whole package is presented with band’s inimitable style and humor and is not to be missed.

The birth of the Traveling Wilburys was a happy accident. Warner Bros. Records’ International Department had asked that George Harrison come up with a B-side for “This Is Love,” a single from his Cloud Nine album. At the time it was customary to couple an A-side with a never-before-heard track, giving the single extra sales value.

This was mid-1988. Cloud Nine was just out. George, along with cowriter Jeff Lynne and their friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison, had been hanging out in Dylan’s studio. I suppose George figured that as long as his pals were on hand, why not use them to knock off this flipside?

The group was born: five guys with star stature in their own rights, but it was George who created this Wilbury environment where five stars could enjoy an ego-free collaboration.
