GMG softball tops Trojans

On Tuesday, June 10, the GMG Wolverines traveled to South Tama to take on a Trojan softball team that was looking for its first win of the season. But GMG freshman pitcher Riah Boege shut down the Trojan offense, striking out 13 batters on the way to an 8-1 victory.

The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead when freshman Skyler Murty singled and scored teammate Taelyn Sash in the top of the first inning. A two-out double by Trojan senior Abigail Chyma in the bottom of the first gave STC a threat to tie the game. But Boege was able to get out of the inning and preserved the one run lead.

GMG added four runs in the top of the third off Trojan freshman starting pitcher Delayna Bear. Two singles were followed by back-to-back doubles by Addison Elmore and Natalie Upah to push the Wolverine lead to 4-0. An error by the Trojans in the inning allowed GMG to increase its lead to 5-0.

The Wolverines added two more runs in the fifth inning, including another RBI double by Elmore. The lone STC run came in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Belle Johannsen led off the inning by drawing a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Shelby Johannsen, Chyma drove in the run with an RBI triple. But the Wolverines added a run in the seventh inning and Boege continued to stifle the Trojan offense to complete the 8-1 victory.

On the evening, STC managed only two hits off of Boege — both coming from Chyma. Boege pitched all seven innings for GMG, striking out 13 and only giving up 2 hits, 3 walks, and 1 earned run. Elmore, a freshman-to-be in the fall, led the way offensively for the Wolverines. She went 4-4 at the plate, with three doubles and three RBIs. The victory sent GMG’s record to 6-4 on the season.

Up next for the STC softball team is a trip to Le Grand to take on East Marshall on Friday night, June 20. This will be followed by a home double-header against West Delaware on Monday, June 23.
