Bobcats blow out Trojans

Gavin Bridgewater

VAN HORNE — The offensive struggles continued for the South Tama football team on Friday night as the Trojans fell 48-0 in a non-district road contest against Benton Community.

STC (1-3) finished the game with just 118 total yards, including negative passing yards, and the Bobcats (3-1) jumped out to an insurmountable 28-0 lead after the first quarter. Quarterback Gavin Bridgewater was the lone offensive bright spot for the Trojans, amassing 83 yards rushing on 19 carries despite not completing a single pass.

Defensively, Kyan McBride (5.5 tackles) and Cyrus Mathes (five tackles) were the top tacklers for STC, but as a unit, they struggled to stop Benton’s efficient passing attack. Between quarterbacks Brendan Heying and Aidan Gallery, the Bobcats attempted just five passes on the night but threw for three touchdowns and 115 yards.

On the ground, Benton utilized a balanced attack as six players finished with at least 15 yards rushing, but none racked up more than 45. Carson Bruns ran for two touchdowns on just three carries, and Sam Wallace caught two passes for 90 yards and two scores.

The Trojans hit the road again this Friday to take on Independence (4-1) before heading home for contests with West Delaware on Sept. 30 and Center Point-Urbana on Oct. 7.
