South Tama locks up seven state bids

BONDURANT — South Tama County senior JoJo Tyynismaa went 4-for-4 at the Class 3A state qualifying track and field meet on Thursday at Bondurant-Farrar High School, advancing to next week’s state meet with a quartet of top-two finishes. Tyynismaa claimed first place in the 100-meter dash and the 400 hurdles, winning in respective times of 13.20 seconds and 1:06.47.

Tyynismaa also made it to state courtesy of a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 hurdles (15.25) and the 200 (26.53). Emma Harwick garnered the top spot in the high jump competition to advance as well, scoring first place with a height of four meters, 10 minutes.” Tyynismaas represent five of South Tama’s automatic state meet qualifiers.

In addition to JoJo’s 4-for-4 performance, Tommy Tyynismaa gained one of the Trojan boys’ two instant entries into state. Tommy took second in the 800 with a time of 2:00.10 to qualify for state. James Brant came in second in the boys’ 1,600 to gain state qualification as well, clocking in at 4:35.10.

The next eight best at-large times and distances will join Thursday’s event champions and runners-up in advancing to state. The Iowa Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships run May 19-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
