The STC Girls Tennis Team traveled to Marion April 15 in WaMaC Girls Tennis action.

Marion was victorious in the final team score 8-1. Senior Hope Werner continued to build a winning record for the season at #1 singles as she was South Tama’s lone winner of the night.

Facing Maddie Steffen, Werner jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match. Midway through, Werner took a 4-1 lead. Serving aggressively proved to be the key to winning the match. By taking control of the point early, she put her opponent on the defense often. Steffen would win just two more games in the match as Werner posted an 8-3 victory. The win moves Werner to 3-1 at #1 singles for the season. At #1 doubles, Werner teamed with Aubrey Roberts to face Steffen and Samantha Sorensen. This match was a back-and-forth affair that saw the team from South Tama lead, fall behind, and then tie things up at 6-6. In the end, Steffen/Sorensen were able to break serve and hold their own to grab the win 8-6.

Roberts faced Gracie Goad at #2 singles. Goad got the early lead by using a powerful serve as she built a 5-0 lead. Roberts fought back and made the match competitive by winning the next two games to make it 5-2. In the end, Goad’s early advantage was too much to overcome as Roberts fell 2-8. At #2 doubles, the senior team of Jordyn Cremeans and Klohe Chyma took on Goad/Natalee Hartmann. The Trojans were unable to get their foothold in a match that was closer than the final score. Goad/Hartmann recorded the 8-1 win for Marion.

At #3 singles, Cremeans faced Hartmann. Hartmann proved too experienced as Cremeans fell 8-0.

In #3 doubles action, Adriana Cervantes teamed with Alondra Bolanos for the first time this season to take on Kadia Cole and Alyssa Janssen. Cervantes/Bolanos got behind 1-6 before grabbing two games to extend the match. In the end, the duo from Marion were victorious 8-3.

Marion posted a win at #4 singles when Sorensen defeated Chyma 8-0. Cole also grabbed a win at #5 singles by downing Cervantes 8-1. Sophomore Bolanos made her varsity debut when she faced Janssen at #6 singles. Bolanos won the second game of the match to keep things close early, but the experience of her opponent gave the advantage. In the end Janssen recorded an 8-1 win.

The Trojans were victorious in JV play as they notched a 5-4 win. South Tama’s Rachel Silhanek/Jimena Nunez recorded two wins on the night 6-1, 6-1. Kara Nachazel/Katie Husak also grabbed two wins for South Tama 6-4, 6-0. The team of Lucy Winter Chaser/Kyrien DeSorbo added to the total when they defeated their opponents 6-4.
