Monday’s contest was a close one for the South Tama County varsity boys team. They travelled to Grundy Center for a non-conference contest. Despite leading going into the second half, the Trojans fell 45-37.

STC’s Tyler Moran got the Trojans on the board with a quick bucket early in the first quarter. Lincoln Kingbird and Tyrin Lasley also contributed to keep the Trojans within two points by the second quarter.

Lasley and Moran scored a combined seven points in the second quarter. Grundy Center led 21-17 at halftime.

Starting the second half the Trojans really had some momentum going. Kingbird and Moran worked to take the lead. Lasley and Kenny Balderas also added points and the Trojans were up 30-27 going into the final eight minutes.

Grundy Center however played up to the competition all while things began to unravel for the Trojans. Turnovers were costly in the fourth quarter as it gave the Spartans the chance for 11 unanswered points. With the Spartans now up 41 to 34, Kingbird cut into their lead with a three point shot. It wasn’t however, enough to get the Trojans back in the game. Grundy Center played a smart final two minutes of basketball by holding onto the ball. This forced the Trojans to foul just to get the ball back. Grundy Center finished the game hitting five free throws for the 45-37 win.

Despite the loss the night resulted in career performances for both Moran and Kingbird. Kingbird scored 14 points while Moran scored 10.

The boys will be on the road to Center Point Urbana on Friday evening.
