With Senior Night celebrations, a 100th career win and a couple of top ranked wrestlers battling it out on the mats, South Tama walked away with plenty to celebrate at their final home dual of the season. South Tama hosted Mount Vernon and Center Point Urbana for some WaMaC conference action on Thursday, January 12.

The Trojans honored four senior wrestlers, managers and cheerleaders at Senior Night including Dillon Graves, Kyle Kucera, McKenna Knock and Danae Cleppe.

The first dual of the night was between Mount Vernon and CPU. The match began with heavyweights Tristan Wirfs (Mount Vernon) and Dalton Stender. Wirfs made quick work of pinning Stender in the first 30 seconds of the match. Not only is Wirfs a state qualifier and ranked 6th at 285 in Class 2A, he is also committed to the University of Iowa to play football in the fall. CPU saw some success in their lighter weight classes earning 12 of their 21 points from 106, 113 and 120. Ultimately, the Pointers early efforts didn’t pan out and they fell 51-21.

Next to take to the mats were South Tama and Mount Vernon. The dual started at 106 with Mount Vernon earning a quick 18 points in forfeits due to South Tama’s open classes. Following that many of the matches were fairly predictable. South Tama’s state qualifiers Brady Fritz, Tanner Probasco and Isaac Judge did their jobs with two falls and a major decision win for 15 team points. There was some shifting in weight classes as STC’s Tanner Walz (170) was out for the night. Garrett Arp wrestled for the varsity team at 145 and Pedro Rodriguez and Isaac Judge each bumped up a weight class to fill the gap.

Weight 138 was the match to watch as STC’s 5th ranked Colton Vest and Mount Vernon’s 8th ranked Tony Garcia faced off. It was a solid match between the two but Vest got the fall in the second period. Mount Vernon took wins at 195, 220 and 285 and ultimately the win with a final score of 48-31.
