She attended Iowa State Teachers College, now known as UNI, for one year. Returning to Des Moines after college, she worked for Look Magazine until she followed her parents to Tama to settle.

Maralyn married Dallas Hotchkiss of Tama, and in this union they had two daughters, DalLynn and Diane. Dallas and Maralyn later divorced.

Maralyn continued her career at The Tama News Herald, now Tama County Publishing, for 38 years. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, volunteering for many church functions; participating as a member of The Red Hat Society; and volunteered as a board member of both the Tama County Food Pantry and the Toledo Senior Center. Maralyn was a state delegate for The Tama County Democrats and volunteered at numerous electoral events. Formerly, she was a member of the Tama Ambulance Service. Maralyn enjoyed playing cards with two card clubs, was an avid reader, and liked to work puzzles.

Maralyn loved traveling with her long-time companion, Norman Dvorak, where they most recently spent several days at “The River House” on the Mississippi. They also traveled to see her grandchildren, and she enjoyed spending her time around family.

Maralyn is survived by her companion, Norman Dvorak of Chelsea, Iowa; daughters, DalLynn Hotchkiss McEltree (Bruce) of Toledo and Diane Tower (Mike) of Strasburg, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Devin Boerm of Washington, DC, DeAna Schatzman (Andy Morris) of Allen, Texas, and Dallas Boerm (Shayne Turner), Dustin Boerm and Dirk Boerm, all of Toledo. She was also proud to have a great-granddaughter Emrie Faye of Allen, Texas.

Preceding her in death were here parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family would like to thank Toledo EMS and Iowa River Hospice for their exceptional care.
