John Richard Haan

John Richard Haan, 65, passed peacefully with his brother Dr. James Haan and sister Nancy by his side on Friday, November 13, 2015.

John was born on January 25, 1950, to John Henry and Catherine Jeanne (Follett) Haan in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He attended Washington High School in Vinton, Iowa. He later obtained his BA in History and Safety from the University of Northern Iowa and his Masters of Science Degree in Industrial Safety Engineering from Central Missouri State University.

John had served in the US Army in Turkey during the Vietnam War earning the rank of Master Sergeant. John was a History and Drivers Education teacher after college in Dubuque, Iowa. John began his professional career at CAN Financial in Lansing, Michigan and then at Ohio Casualty Insurance in Cincinnati, working as an Insurance Adjuster. John found his passion however, as a Safety Inspector with OSHA in Des Moines, Iowa. John had specialized training in asbestos removal and traveled the entire State of Iowa for his OSHA duties. John trained and aided respirator professionals for the Safety personnel after the World Trade Center attack clean up, earning the 911 Award. John loved to read, especially topics including military, history, politics, photography and scuba diving.

John is survived by his brothers Gerald Haan and his wife Susan, Thomas Haan, James Haan and his wife Ami; sister Nancy Hill; 13 nephews and nieces; 16 great nephews and great nieces, and one Speedy Cat.

John was preceded in death by his father John Henry Haan, mother Catherine Jeanne Haan and his sister Mary Catherine Haan.
