Traer man charged with child endangerment after allegedly pulling gun on adult, minor
TRAER – A Traer man has been arrested and charged with child endangerment after allegedly pulling a gun in the early morning hours of Aug. 8 while two victims — an adult and a minor — were present.
Cody Darwin Winkowitsch, 35, was arrested on a warrant on Aug. 9 at his Second Street residence in Traer following an incident that took place the day before.
According to the criminal complaint, one of the alleged victims appeared at the Sinclair Gas Station in Traer around 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 8, where she approached a Tama County Sheriff’s Deputy and reported that Winkowitsch had arrived home earlier that morning intoxicated and confronted her, picked up his AR-15 style rifle, cocked it, and stated that he was going to harm himself.
The alleged victim further told the deputy that the minor victim heard the gun being cocked and proceeded to scream and cry as a result. The deputy later spoke with the minor victim.
Winkowitsch made an initial appearance in custody in Tama County District Court on Aug. 9 on the single count of child endangerment which is an aggravated misdemeanor. He was held on a $5,000 cash or surety bond and ordered to obtain a substance abuse evaluation upon release. He was also ordered to consume no alcohol while the case is pending.
Later in the day on Aug. 9, a temporary no-contact order was issued for the two victims in the case. Winkowitsch was ordered to stay away from the protected parties including their residence. He was also ordered not to possess any firearms, offensive weapons, or ammunition while the order is in effect and to deliver any such weapons and ammunition to the Tama County Sheriff for safekeeping within 24 hours of the order.
Winkowitsch was released on bond/surety on Aug. 9. His arraignment was set to take place Aug. 29 at 9 a.m.
Attorney Scott Hunter with the Marshalltown Public Defender’s Office has been appointed to represent Winkowitsch in this case.
