A long sustained wind event called a Derecho ripped through Tama and Toledo early Monday afternoon.

“It struck with a lot of force,” Tama County Emergency Management Director Mindy Benson said.

The National Weather Service notified Tama County right before the derecho occurred.

“They were very proactive in helping me get city workers off the streets,” Benson said.

Benson reported a few very minor injuries but substantial damage to every community in the county. Several semis were overturned along Highway 30. There are also some ruptured gas lines around the community.

Help for clean up is coming. Currently Mahaska County Cert Team is in town. Rubico will arrive tomorrow.

It may be a few days before power is restored in the county as several main lines are out.

Tama County Dispatch has been taking call after call since around 12 p.m. today.

“I have to give props to dispatch. They have done a tremendous job. They’ve been wonderful,” Benson said.

The Reinig Center is currently being used as a shelter for anyone who may need it in Tama and Toledo.

The best thing people can do is stay home.

“I urge people across the county as soon as dark falls please stay home,” said Benson.

If you need to report damage please call Benson at 484-6261 and leave a message. She will get in touch with you as soon as possible.
