Millgate scholarship applications available

UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center is now accepting applications to the Millgate Nursing Loan program. Funds are available to students from the GRMC service area pursuing education in a nursing profession that would practice in areas with direct patient care. These funds are also available to adult students pursuing a healthcare career and those currently working in healthcare and seeking advanced training. This program was started in 1974 by Sylvester Millgate, a veterinarian from Brooklyn. He believed in the importance of recruiting high-quality nursing staff to ensure GRMC could continue to fulfill its mission of providing healthcare for life. When Millgate passed away, he left a bequest to GRMC to provide funds for loans to needy students pursuing a course at an accredited nursing school.

“Our employees are our best asset,” says Doris Rindels, interim CEO. “This program is beneficial to nurses currently working here and for any students pursuing a degree in the nursing field.”

The program allows loans to be used for tuition to students to pursue a course at an accredited nursing school or to those students currently attending school. In exchange, recipients agree to repay the loan at an interest-free rate or work for a minimum time commitment at the medical center after graduation.

Applications are now available at the GRMC Human Resources office or online at bit.ly/MillgateLoanApp. Individuals who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers have until Friday, March 30, to submit completed application forms. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The applications will be reviewed and recipients will be notified in May 2018. For additional information about the Millgate Nursing Loan program, please call the GRMC human resources development at 641-236-2405.
