Elberon Legion Auxiliary discusses upcoming events

ELBERON — The Elberon American Legion Auxiliary met April 11 with the meeting opening in the usual form. Vice President Marce Nekola presented the colors and offered an opening prayer. “The Vacant Chair” was read by President Lorraine Vileta and the group joined in the reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Secretary Norma Riha called roll of the officers and read the minutes of the March meeting. Treasurer Pat Sauer gave the financial report. Both reports approved as read.

Old business included discussing the March 26 county meeting held in Clutier. A motion was made to keep the same officers for next year. President and Secretary/Treasurer is Diane Caloud and the Vice-President Vileta. The next county meeting will be hosted by Elberon Legion and Auxiliary on June 25 with a noon potluck, followed with the disposal of retired flags and the meeting. The Tama county Government Day was held with 160 students expected to attend on April 10. Pat Sauer furnished four dozen cookies for the event.

New Business was one pin fine and the signing of a thinking-of-you card for Lynne Kasal and birthday cards for Dorothy Hayek and Todd Rank.

Nekola, Sauer and Vileta helped with the Iowa Veterans Home Bingo on April17. Several residents enjoyed receiving a dollar bill for each bingo.

Finishing touches were discussed for the Memorial Day Program to be held at the National Cemetery, south of Vining on May 27. The Clutier Legion will march in with the flags and give the closing salute. Giving opening and closing prayers will be Don Drahos. Giving Poppy readings will be Lauren Vavroch and Lily Becker. Speaker is Eric Rosario, a 20-year career Navy veteran from Montour. Acting MC is Roy Lidtke. Hoping for a nice morning.

Vileta will present scholarships for the Elberon American Legion and Auxiliary at the Benton Community Schools awards program on May 8.

The May 9 meeting will have us getting together at the Tama Eagles for lunch at 11 a.m.

Vileta won the door prize and served lunch.
