Toledo Police remind property owners to clear sidewalks of snow and ice
Now that winter is finally upon us, the Toledo Police Department reminds homeowners who have sidewalks in front of their homes to make sure they are kept clear of snow and ice. A Toledo City Code Chapter makes it clear this is the responsibility of the property owner.
If an officer of the Toledo Police Department observes a violation under City Code Chapter 136.03, the officer will serve the property owner a written notice, attached to a copy of the city ordinance and ask that property owner to clear the sidewalk of any snow and or ice accumulations.
At that time, they will have 24 hours to remove the snow and or ice accumulations. If the homeowner fails to do so within the 24-hour period, the city will then clear the snow and or ice accumulations and assess the costs to the homeowner on their property taxes. The costs assessed to the homeowner is over $100.
It is also the responsibility of homeowners to maintain a sidewalk that is free of any hazards besides just snow and ice. The walk path must be free and clear of any and all debris that could make walking on the sidewalk dangerous.
Citizens are free to report any and all violations to the Toledo Police Department by wither stopping in at 214 West High or calling the department at 641-484-3013.
