“I want to give something back to the community, I love Tama-Toledo,” Conrad Brown said Saturday, Dec. 21. He had just opened Bargains on Main in downtown Tama, a store offering a variety of merchandise he envisions to have different offerings monthly while meeting any customer demands.

Among the inventory is a focus on new childrens clothing with some womens and mens clothing. And there’s a selection of variety store items.

“I decided to move back to the Tama-Toledo area where I grew up,” Brown said after living near the Quad Cities on the Illinois side in the small town of Matherville.

There he got the inspiration for Bargains on Main. He says he admired the only retail store in Matherville and how it operated.

“Price points are low,” Brown said, a business formula he plans for Bargains on Main. The new store is located at 229 West 3rd Street and is open 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The telephone number is 641-387-0099.

For long-time residents the space once was expanded into by the adjacent Bee-Hive Department Store. Previously it had also been the location of the Candy Kitchen.
