Thys Chevrolet dealership at the junction of U.S. Highway 63 and Business Highway 30 in Toledo closed its doors Friday, Oct. 4, and the property is now offered for sale.

The vehicle inventory on the lot was driven off during the day on Friday and no vehicles remained Saturday.

What prompted the closing has not been disclosed. An inquiry from The Chronicle to the dealership on Wednesday of lst week promised a reply but one was received by Chronicle dealine on Monday.

A sign prominently displayed on the front of the car showroom states the location is for sale and for customers to contact Thys locations in Belle Plaine and Blairstown for sales and service. Tama County online property tax records list Joel Thys as the sole owner of the property.

Thys, owner of Thys Auto Group, purchased the former Family Auto dealership, then owned by Ed Polaco, in March, 2010

Social media posts claimed recently the property had been purchased by a convenience store chain. However, a respose to a Chronicle inquiry to the company said, “We do not have an announcement. We have looked for new locations we can expand in the Toledo / Tama market over the years and we’ll continue to work towards that.”

The Thys location was first developed by Hershal Weidner as a Ford dealership. It also was the sales location for periods of time of Hartwig Motors, Clark Jones modular homes and Austin Motors.
