Tama Mayor calls for annexation

Tama Mayor Dan Zimmerman

Tama Mayor Dan Zimmerman said Monday night, Aug. 6, the city should consider annexing property on Tama’s east side which is the former location of the Lenertz Bros. truck stop. He said attempts to gain cooperation from the current owner to clean it up have not been totally successful.

The building and property is situated outside Tama city limits in the county while some adjacent property is within the city limits. The location is west of the U.S. 30 Expressway Tama exit at L Avenue.

Zimmerman said he had contacts with the property owner, identified as John Hoth, Cedar Rapids. One section of canopy over the former location of fuel pumps had been removed after one talk, Zimmerman said,

However, the mayor said he had asked Hoth to clean up more of the property prior to the Tama sesquicentennial Celebration on July 28 and nothing happened.

City Attorney Dan Rathjen was directed to return to the council with a report on voluntary and involuntary annexation procedures at the next meeting.
