Elberon Legion Auxiliary prepares for spring activities
ELBERON — The James R. Kalina Unit 226 American Legion Auxiliary of Elberon met April 9 and enjoyed a lunch at the Tama Sale Barn. The minutes of the March meeting were read by Secretary Norma Riha. Treasurer Pat Sauer gave the financial report.
Old business included a report by Lorraine Vileta on the Tama County Government Day that was held in Toledo on April 8. There were 48 students present from the North Tama Community Schools and the South Tama Community Schools. The GMG school district and the Union school were unable to attend. The students registered and then each voted on 10 questions pertaining to currant events. They then visited the different county offices and learned of the duties of each office. The students returned to the Reinig Center for a lunch furnished and served by the auxiliary ladies of the county. Sauer furnished cookies.
A flag folding demonstration was given by legionnaires Bob Knaack and Duane Hosek. Arlo Cibula, a Sons of the American Legion member, read the meaning of each fold. A few of the Tama County officials spoke and took questions about their office. The speaker was Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt. He gave a very interesting presentation and answered a lot of questions from the group. A fellow officer and his canine joined the Sheriff to show how the dog handles commands and even found a drug previously hidden in the room. The students had a lot of questions for the handler also. The dog cost the county $8,000.
Birthday cards were signed and sent to Todd Rank and Dorothy Hayek. April 15 the Tama county auxiliaries will go to the Veterans Home to assist with Bingo. Each unit will furnish $10 to give as $1 prizes.
May 6 the auxiliary scholarship will be awarded at the awards program at the Benton Community schools to Weston Kaestner. The Memorial Day program at the Vining National Cemetery on May 25 was discussed. For the May 14 meeting, the unit will eat at the A9 Chinese restaurant in Toledo at 11:30 a.m.
Meeting closed with a mindful reading by Marce Nekola. Riha won the door prize.
