50th Vojtech family reunion held in July

On July 28, 2013 the descendants of Anton and Maggie Chizek Vojtech gathered for their 50th annual Vojtech family reunion. The reunion was held at Butch Steuhm’s home in Tama. Fifty-one family members were present and enjoyed a potluck dinner.

To celebrate the day, “50th” balloons were placed around the reunion by cousin, Wayne “Bubber” Yohn Jr. Bubber informed the family that it was our 50th year to gather together and shared the history of our reunion which many younger members did not know. The Vojtech’s were a part of the annual Chizek reunion that started in 1950. The year 2013 is the 63rd consecutive year the Vojtechs have gathered. After the death of Maggie Chizek Vojtech in January 1963, her children decided to start their own family reunion. It was decided that the Vojtech’s would meet the last Sunday of July every year. They first started gathering at the Tama Park and Bubber recalled an Uncle having to spend the night in the shelter house the night prior to the reunion to guarantee their spot. The reunions have since been moved to family homes where members take turns hosting the reunion.

Monica (Steuhm) Ospina was the winner of the candy door prize. The rest of the afternoon was enjoyed by visiting with one another and playing games like “Vojtech Family Bingo” and the “Vojtech Family Scavenger Hunt”. The games paired young with old and encouraged cousins to get to know one another. Fun was had by all.

The next reunion will be the last Sunday in July 2014 at Tim & Michelle Bradley’s home in Tama.
