“Mike’s Bring Him Home Run” is July 17
Benefit and 5K walk – run for McNamara family
Deb and Jim McNamara are eager to have their son Mike home again. Mike McNamara has been away, spending the last 15 months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. In April, 2009, McNamara, then a high school senior, suffered a severe brain
injury after a brief illness and medical complications.
Deb McNamara, MIke’s mother, has been staying with him regardless of location nearly ’round-the-clock, except for occasional breaks.Since entering rehabilitation, he has undergone extensive therapy and made substantial progress. While he is
still undergoing therapy, his family is planning on a homecoming this summer.
This has required the McNamaras to extensively remodel their house to accommodate Mike.Consequently, a number of family friends have rallied to help the McNamaras and are working to help them defray extensive remodeling costs.
A Spaghetti Dinner and “Mike’s Bring Him Home Run,” a 5K run – walk and one mile run – walk are planned. The dinner is July 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Marshalltown’s St. Henry Church Dining Hall, 211 W. Olive St.
The dinner team has been busy collecting donations but still need help.”While we have received a number of donations and are grateful for those, we still need a number of items, said
Peggy Hannam, dinner coordinator. “We will be placing a board listing them at the Community Y, where people can select items to donate. We will have a silent
auction as well and donations are welcome.”The 5K events and one mile walk – run will be held July 17 at the Community Y’s Cultural Center, 108 Washington St. The 5K events begin at 8 a.m. The one mile events begin at 9 a.m.The run-walk events are fitting, as McNamara participated in track and field as a student-athlete. Volunteers are needed for race
management and other jobs.
