The Meskwaki Settlement School’s cross country program kicked off their season on Thursday, Sept. 3, when they traveled to Eldora to run at the Pine Lake Run.

Competing in a large field of runners, and battling the high heat and humidity, the Warriors had several impressive results.

Leading the way for the girls squad was returning state meet qualifier, sophomore Bree Scabbyrobe. Scabbyrobe finished in 27th place with a time of 25:56. Other finishers for MSS included: freshman Jayla Keahna (55th, 30:22); sophomore Martha Blackcloud (75th, 33:55); and junior Kaelonna Kahler (80th, 36:16). West Marshall won the girls team competition.

For the boys, Warrior freshman Jesse Bear secured a top-ten finish when he ran a time of 20:15 to take 9th place. Junior Jarvis Bear was close behind (20:44), to finish in 12th place. Both runners earned medalist places for MSS.

Other Warrior competitors included: junior Jaymison Hill (27th, 22:40, personal best); freshman Ryson Davenport (37th, 23:49); sophomore Roman Tricky (62nd, 27:25); sophomore Markelle Wabaunasee (69th, 28:42); junior Emiliano Durin (73rd, 29:49); junior Izik Furcap (78th, 31:40); and sophomore Abram Wanatee (83rd, 33:42). The MSS boys (120) finished in 5th place as a team, just behind East Marshall (120), Aplington-Parkersburg (84), Dike New-Hartford (57), and champion Jesup (30).

For head coach Tracy Seinknecht, it was a solid start to the young season. Both the MSS boys and girls will compete at the South Tama Co-Ed XC Invite on Monday, Sept. 14. The races will take place at the South Tama high school campus.
