Trojans prevail over Union in district play

Class 3A District six was back in action Friday evening. The South Tama Trojans travelled to Union to take on the Knights. South Tama was looking to improve their 2-3 record while the Knights were looking for their first win of the season.

Union began the evening on a strong note scoring after 14 plays. The Knights’ Brandon Tompkins punched into the end zone for the touchdown.

The Trojans responded with a 10 play drive. Kyler Smith scored the touchdown and Uriel Martinez secured the extra point giving the Trojans a 7-6 lead.

Union wasted no time scoring right away. Grant Behrens connected with Jacob Carey. A two point conversion was successful for the Knights.

Well into the second quarter after switching possessions a few times South Tama tied things up.

Brayden Smith punched into the end zone on a quarterback keeper. An extra point by Martinez had the two teams at 14 all headed into halftime.

Straight out of halftime the Knights defense held STC to a quick four and out.

Once back on offense Tompkins made quick work to score his second touchdown of the evening.

South Tama finally found some offensive production late in the third quarter. Smith connected with Gavin Jimenez to once again take the lead 21-20 after the extra point by Martinez.

As the night wore on emotions ran high.

Penalties and turnovers shook both teams in the fourth quarter.

Jesus Medina intercepted a pass for the Trojans only to have Union’s Gibson Purdy cough up his own interception a few plays later.

With the clock ticking down the Trojans had some life left in them. Logan Schmidt came up with a huge catch from Smith to move the Trojans into scoring position. STC scored, securing a 28-21 victory over Union.

The Trojans travel to Mount Vernon tonight for more District 6 action.

Game leaders for the Trojans included Brayden Smith with 142 passing yards, Payton Vest with 94 rushing yards and Logan Schmidt with 42 receiving yards. Kyler Smith led with 10.5 tackles.

Game leaders for the Knights included Grant Behrens with 110 passing yards, Brandon Tompkins with 94 rushing yards, Jacob Carey with 43 receiving yards. Dallas Blackburn led with 7.5 tackles.
