STC FROSH football starts strong

South Tama’s Freshman/Sophomore football team scored an opening victory in their first game of the season on Aug. 30. Traveling to Roland-Story, the Trojans used a combination of explosive offensive plays and defensive turnovers to convincingly beat the Norseman, 38-6.

After both teams’ opening drives stalled, STC’s Ethan Page came up with a key interception on the Norseman’s second drive. That possession resulted in a Trojan touchdown on a 7-yard run by quarterback Ryan Brant. A two-point conversion gave the Trojans an 8-0 lead. However, on the next Roland-Story possession, they scored on a long 51-yard pass for a touchdown. A failed 2-point conversion put the score at 8-6.

The biggest plays of the game for South Tama soon followed in the second quarter before the halftime break. On the next Trojan possession, Page scored on a 70-yard touchdown screen pass. This was followed by a 74-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Brant. Then, after Page’s second interception of the night, Brant connected with Chanden Graybeal on an 11-yard touchdown pass. This gave the Trojans a 30-6 halftime edge.

Because of the length of the first half, the second half of the game was played under a continuous clock and a time-limit. In the shortened half, South Tama was able to score one more touchdown and shutout the Norseman from scoring again.

The Trojan FROSH team’s (1-0) next game will be against Charles City on Friday, Sept. 6 at STC High School. The FROSH games begin at 4:45 p.m., followed by the Trojan varsity football game.
