South Tama softball falls to Pella in regionals

PELLA — The South Tama softball team picked the right time to put up some runs, but Pella responded with too many for the Trojans to atone for.

The host Dutch responded to South Tama’s big inning with an even bigger one, bouncing the Trojans from the first round of Class 4A Region 6 play with a 16-4, four-inning victory on Thursday night.

Pella (21-11) led 6-0 after two innings and seemed to be on cruise control until South Tama (0-31) exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth. The Dutch did them six better, scoring 10 times in the bottom half to end the game by mercy rule.

Shelby Johannsen hit a two-run single and Millie Mathes-Henle had an RBI single in South Tama’s four-run frame. South Tama had only scored more than four runs twice during the regular season.

The Trojans totaled six hits, with Mathes-Henle going 2-for-3 to lead the way. Kailiee Keen and Madison Hitchcock both singled and scored, Abigail Chyma had a hit, and Taylor Dolezal drove in a run and scored. Macie Mathes-Henle also scored a run.

Delayna Bear took the loss in the circle for STC.

Katie Scheckel was 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored to lead Pella.
