PHILADELPHIA — After a long comeback season, STC senior Tommy Tyynismaa wrapped up his high school track career on Sunday. Traveling all the way to Franklin Field in Philadelphia to compete in one final 800 meter race.

Tyynismaa started the season returning from a stress fracture in his foot sustained during basketball and did not race during the indoor season. Despite the slow start, he went on to qualify for the Drake Relays, earn four medals at the state track meet, and set a personal record at the Belmont mile.

With a few extra weeks of training, Tommy was set to toe the line against some of the nation’s biggest and brightest stars at New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

The race started out slow with 12 competitors tightly bunched on the track. Getting pushed to the back early, Tommy sat and waited for a chance to make his move. It came at the bell lap and gave an opportunity to move into the lead. Tyynismaa held the lead steady until about 200 to go when the field caught up to him.

With a bold move in a relatively challenging race, the effort earned him sixth place in his heat and 59th overall in a field of 102 competitors.

With his high school track campaign now over, Tyynismaa turns his efforts to training in the fall at Iowa State University.
